Questions about Avita
Which languages Avita teaches, how a spoken lesson works, and what's free.
The basics
What is Avita?
Avita is a language-learning app for iPhone and Android where every lesson is a spoken conversation inside a story: you answer out loud in full sentences, and every answer is graded and corrected.
Which languages can I learn with Avita?
English speakers can learn Spanish, French, Italian or German. Spanish and Italian speakers can learn English. Every course runs from A1 (beginner) to B2 (upper intermediate) and has more than 200 lessons.
Is Avita on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Avita: Language Learning is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android phones and tablets. There is no desktop version yet.
Is Avita the same as AVITA laptops or the AVITA avatar company?
No. Avita the language-learning app (avita.lat) is not related to the Avita laptop brand or to AVITA, the Japanese avatar company. The app is published as "Avita: Language Learning".
Who made Avita?
Reed and Ethan, best friends for 15 years, built Avita after quitting their jobs in Boston and moving to Buenos Aires to learn Spanish. The apps they tried drilled vocabulary or chased streaks, and none of them got them talking, so they built the one they wanted. They still use it.
How lessons work
What does a lesson look like?
Each lesson opens with a short reading that teaches the grammar and words you're about to use; tap Listen to hear it read aloud with each word highlighted. The lesson's key words are ready as flashcards for a quick warm-up. Then a character from the story starts talking, and you answer out loud while the new material is still fresh.
Do I have to speak out loud?
That's the point of Avita: you say every answer out loud, in a full sentence, from your first lesson. If you can't talk right now, you can type your answer instead.
How does Avita grade my answers?
Every answer you give gets a score, a natural corrected version of what you said and a short explanation of anything you got wrong. If you're stuck you can ask for a hint or a translation.
What is the story?
Each course is a continuing story with characters you meet again. In Spanish you move into Edificio Sol, an apartment building in Medellín, and meet your neighbors, starting with Doña Carmen at the bakery. Italian starts a new life in Bologna, French a new life in France and German in a Berlin allotment garden. Every lesson moves the story forward, so new words show up where you need them.
Is Avita good for complete beginners?
Yes. Courses start at A1 with the sounds of the language and words you can already guess, and you speak short full sentences from the first lesson. The reading at the start of each lesson gives you what you need before you're asked to say it.
Does Avita have flashcards?
Yes. Every lesson's key words become flashcards with spaced repetition, there are curated decks, and you can describe any topic to get a custom deck.
Can I practice real-life situations?
Yes, with Avita Pro. Role-play scenarios put you in situations like ordering at a café, sorting out a problem with your hotel room or getting a haircut, and open chat lets you talk about anything.

Is Avita free?
